The Box Office History of The Chronicles of Narnia
“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” was brought to life to the big screen last 2005 by Walden Media and Buena Vista pictures and it was a great success being one of the block-buster films of 2005. “Prince Caspian” was also brought to life to the big screen last 2008, with the same production team, Walden Media and Buena Vista pictures. Both of the first two films were directed by Andrew Adamson. The third film, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” almost didn’t make to the silver screen. This is because Buena Vista dropped the franchise due to the low box-office of “Prince Caspian”. But many thanks to 20th Century Fox, for they saved the franchise. Because of this, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” was released last 2010 in breath-taking digital 3d by Walden Media and this time, with 20th Century Fox. The third film was directed by Michael Apted.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Let’s go now to the
box-office records of the first three films. “The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe” fought in the 2005 box-office against the last installment of Star
Wars, “Star Wars episode III, The Revenge of the Sith” released summer of 2005
and the fourth installment of Harry Potter franchise, “Harry Potter and the
Goblet of Fire” released fall of 2005. “Star Wars episode III, The Revenge of
the Sith” grossed $848.8 million worldwide while “Harry Potter and the
Goblet of Fire” grossed $869.9 million worldwide and “The Lion, the Witch and
the Wardrobe” released winter of 2005 grossed $750 million worldwide. Not bad
for the first film, for it was ranked 3rd in the 2005 box-office.
Prince Caspian
The second film of the
franchise “Prince Caspian”, was cornered by two of the most anticipated films
of 2008, Marvels “Iron Man”, staring Robert Downey Jr. and “Indiana Jones 4
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”. All three movies were released summer of 2008. “Iron
Man” grossed $585.2 million worldwide while “Indiana Jones 4 Kingdom of the
Crystal Skull” grossed $786.6 worldwide and “Prince Caspian” grossed $419.7
million worldwide. Although “Prince Caspian” have low box-office, still the
film was ranked 10th in the box-office of 2008.
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The third installment of
Narnia franchise, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” was released last winter of
2010. It fought head to head in the box-office against Buena Vista’s “Tron
Legacy”. Both films were released in digital 3d. The third Narnia film was good
at the box office of 2010. As it defeats Buena Vista’s “Tron Legacy” grossing
$400.1 million worldwide and “The Tourist” of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie
grossing $278.3 million worldwide. “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” grossed
$415.7 million worldwide. Although “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” was great
at the winter box-office of 2010, still its box-office isn’t enough to defeat
Buena Vista’s “Alice in Wonderland” and the seventh installment of Harry Potter
franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1” released fall of 2010
as a result, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” ranked 12th in the
box-office of 2010.
Box Office,
promotion and marketing problems:
Let’s go now to the
reasons why the last two films gave a low box-office. First off: “Prince
Caspian”. As stated above, the second film was sandwiched between the two of
the most anticipated films of summer 2008, “Iron Man” and “Indiana Jones 4”.
Also, the second film was released on summer, whereas the first film was
released on winter having great number of audience and resulting a very high
worldwide box-office. The second film was also weak in promotion and marketing
shortly weeks before its release date. That is why many moviegoers forgot the
second Narnia film last 2008 and many of them were shocked for the release of
the second film because it was a little bit of a surprise and the marketing of
the movie was not as good as given for the first film. As a result, Disney (Buena
Vista) dropped the franchise for the second movie didn’t reach the expectations
of the company.
Second: “The Voyage of the
Dawn Treader”. Great for us, Narnia fans for the franchise of the movie was
saved by 20th Century Fox shortly after a month that Disney dropped
the series. The third movie was released last December 2010. Again, Narnia
movie was back to December release and this time, the movie was released in
breath-taking digital 3d. Unfortunately, the movie also gave a low box-office
and its total was lower than “Prince Caspian” had. Yes, Narnia movie is great
on a December release, but the third film has many mistakes on the movie from
the book. That is the very reason why it flopped in the box-office again.
Many fans were
disappointed for the last two films: “Prince Caspian” and “The Voyage of the
Dawn Treader”. The story of the book and movie has great differences from each
other and also, many scenes were added even thou not stated on the book itself.
