Narnia 4 and the Future of the Chronicles

The next Narnia film is still in hold as stated above. There are many reasons why the next film is still in hold. One of the many reasons is this: The total worldwide box-office given by the last two films are very low compared to the first film. This gives Walden Media and 20th Century Fox pictures to negotiate with The C.S. Lewis Estate whether if the production team will still produce more films and which book should be adapted next. In a report early this May, Douglas Gresham (stepson of C.S. Lewis, co-producer of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian and one of the executive producers of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) revealed the main problem why Narnia 4 is still in hold up to now is that, there is a seven-year moratorium on producing any Narnia films outside of Walden Media.

According to Douglas Gresham:

-There is a seven-year moratorium on producing any Narnia films outside of Walden Media.
-He might have future films made independently.
-The Silver Chair is the film he would like to make next.
-He would want Andrew Adamson to direct the next Narnia film, but thinks he would be too expensive.
-In the meantime, he will focus on a film adaptation of Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters.”

According to Walden Media's Michael Flaherty:

"There are multiple opinions on all this and a lot of different players: The C.S. Lewis estate, the studio, our company—and we’re not all of one mind. I would love to find a way where the economics work, acknowledging the decline. I’d like to do The Magician’s Nephew. Other people want to do The Silver Chair, and there’s disagreement about the economics and the overall vision of where the franchise should go next. My hope is that we may all become of one mind, but unless something providential happens there, I’m focusing on a number of other stories."

Here's the full interview.

My Evaluation:
Now that we all know, the future of Narnia franchise is still in hold, the best way we can do is to wait for the next movie (if  there will be). But all I can say is that Narnia stories will never be forgotten by any reader. One of the best-selling book series of all time, Narnia is. We may lose the movies but always remember that the books are still there for us to re-visit the magical land of Narnia. Never lose hope for the future of Narnia. Yes, it’s going to be a very long wait whether if we are still going to see Narnia in the big-screen, but I believe that we can still able to see Narnia in the big-screen again. And this time, the next Narnia movies must be better and the production team should stick to the true storyline of Narnia’s books, strong and big marketing and promotion must be taken into account and they (the production team) must do all their best to save Narnia’s franchise and make all the books in to the big-screen.  Now, I should say that “The longer we wait, the better the film should be.” As a big Narnia fan, I really do want to see Narnia again in the big screen. I will pray that Narnia film in the future will be alive and better than those before. For me, a reboot is not a good choice. To reboot the series, there will be new cast and crew members and I don’t like this to happen (most likely for the new cast), for I love all the cast members of Narnia and for me, they are all great in acting and some enhancements will do. Continue the series I say. I don’t care if Walden Media will not be in the future of Narnia for what I care is that I want to see Narnia again in the big screen. Narnia’s future lies in the hands of Douglas Gresham, us fans (whether if are still going to support the film or not) and in God. I believe that there will still be Narnia in the future and as for now, we have to wait for seven years to whether see Narnia again in the big screen or not anymore. Waiting, hoping and praying are now essential. Never lose hope to see Narnia again in the big-screen!

FURTHER UP AND FURTHER IN NARNIANS!

  2. Oh, definitely Andrew Adamson if you can get him!! He retains the magic from the books even as he changes bits of the story. And, besides, he's just amazing.
